We asked the children what Physical Education means to them. Here are their words and ideas:

At Moon’s Moat, we are committed to teaching children the life skills that will positively shape their future. We want every child to develop a genuine love of sport and physical activity, helping them build healthy habits that last a lifetime. Through high‑quality teaching and engaging learning opportunities, we support children to succeed in physical education and to develop strong physical and emotional well‑being. We also place great importance on social and emotional development, helping children learn how to cooperate, collaborate, show fairness, work as a team, and build resilience, independence and perseverance.

We aim for all children to develop the fundamental skills needed to take part in a wide range of physical activities, including games, gymnastics and dance. We also teach essential skills that help keep children safe, such as learning to swim.

PE at Moon’s Moat offers enjoyable and appropriately challenging learning through a variety of physical activities, both in lessons and throughout the school day. From Nursery to Year 4, children follow a broad, balanced and progressive curriculum taught by their class teacher. We use a combination of GetSet4PE and our own units of work to meet the needs of our children and provide a rich range of experiences. Across each unit, children are introduced to vocabulary that builds year on year, helping them apply this language confidently in lessons and in physical activity beyond the classroom.

Classes take part in timetabled PE lessons covering a range of skills and sports. Lessons are taught in blocks linked to key skill areas—such as gymnastics, games and fundamental movement—or to specific sports. Dance is taught through topic‑based learning, helping children make meaningful links with other subjects. Our long‑term plan ensures full coverage of the National Curriculum and supports children in developing confidence, tolerance and an appreciation of their own and others’ strengths. PE is adapted to ensure it is fully inclusive and that every child can participate.

In Early Years, children experience daily physical development opportunities through continuous provision, alongside weekly PE lessons. All children benefit from active playtimes and lunchtimes, supported by playground markings, climbing equipment, play trolleys, exercise equipment (KS2) and a climbing wall (KS2). They also take part in active sessions such as Disco Dough, Squiggle Whilst You Wiggle and Super Movers. These opportunities help children meet the national expectation of 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Children can also join extra‑curricular clubs offering a variety of sports and physical activities.

Children—particularly those in KS2—are invited to take part in competitive sporting events within the local area, organised by the School Games Organiser. These events allow children to apply their skills, develop teamwork and leadership, and enjoy representing the school.

Each year, we celebrate an ‘Active Week’, giving all children the chance to try new physical experiences. Forest School also takes place across the school to further support physical development, increase active time and promote well‑being through outdoor learning.

We strive to motivate children to take part in a wide range of sports through teaching that is engaging, supportive and fun. Through PE, children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, and many enjoy the excitement and achievement of competitive sport. We equip them with the skills, confidence and enthusiasm they need to lead happy, healthy and active lives. Along the way, they develop independence, self‑motivation, resilience and responsibility, as well as a growing understanding of physical education vocabulary that will support their learning in the future.
